2018-19 State Executive Council
amanda kobayashi, president
As the newly elected Hawaii HOSA state president, Amanda Kobayashi is looking forward to her second year as a member of the executive council. Amanda hopes to work with the other officers to help make this HOSA year truly unforgettable. She is extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue to build her skills as a leader and serve the Hawaii HOSA with aloha.
Growing up throughout her childhood, Amanda always looked up to her older sister, Erin, as a role model. Amanda joined HOSA her sophomore year, after hearing about the wonderful experiences her sister gained from the organization. This past 2 years, she was able to attend HOSA’s International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas; both of which were amazing experiences. HOSA has given not only her, but her sister so much, and she is extremely honored to be able to give back to this ever growing organization.
Amanda has always found joy in helping others and hopes to take that passion into the medical field. She currently aspires to become an Physical Therapist and is working to one day help those get back to being as active as they once were. Being surrounded by those who have the same passion to one day join the medical field, has inspired her interest to serve.
As a senior attending Moanalua High School, Amanda also enjoys participating in many other co-curricular and extracurricular activities. This includes, being apart of the Moanalua High School varsity soccer team and she hopes to continue the sport throughout her high school career. Amanda also serves as secretary of her school’s National Honor Society and looks forward to continue to give back to the community. Amanda is also a current volunteer at Kaiser Permanente, a place that has strengthened her passion for the medical field. She hopes to use all of the lessons she has learned as serving as leadership intern to guide her along with her team to a successful year!
Even when things do not go as planned, Amanda remembers the quote, “Everything happens for a reason” to gain perspective on challenging events. She hopes to encourage optimism and a positivity while serving HOSA and its members with all of the HOSA state officers. Amanda looks forward to meeting the members and is hopeful that she will help make this year a memorable one!

Bethany Lapitan, Vice president
Born and raised in Ewa Beach, Bethany grew up in a family who all aspired to become apart of the healthcare field. Being in HOSA since freshman year was a great way for her to experience being in a competitive atmosphere, gain new leadership skills, and to ultimately be surrounded by people who share one commonality; becoming hopeful future health professionals.
Aside from HOSA, Bethany is involved in many other extra and co-curricular activities. Currently, Bethany is very active in class (’19) activities. She enjoys serving for her class and growing with them as they get closer to senior year. Beth is also apart of the Moanalua High School “Menehune” Marching Band and Color Guard as she is apart of the color guard. Being in color guard is Bethany’s favorite way to have fun while exercising. Another activity she is apart of is the Moanalua High School’s Symphony Orchestra. Bethany is a violinist and has been playing since fourth grade. She also enjoys volunteering at various events and at her church whenever she gets the chance. All of these extra curricular activities keep her busy and on her feet.
Last year, Bethany was apart of the 2017-2018 Hawaii HOSA State Executive council as secretary. From this wonderful experience, she continued learning amazing, new leadership skills from the other officers and training. With this, Bethany plans to work hard in this new season of HOSA. She will do her utmost best to dedicate her time to this organization as it continues to flourish in success. Her main goals are to take part in expanding the membership growth in Hawaii HOSA and to also improve the communication between the officers and members.
Bethany’s favorite quote of all time is a bible verse. Matthew 6:33-34 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. Beth was born into a christian family, so God is her number one motivator. This bible verse helps her always keep her eyes on Him despite all of the activities and responsibilities. Because she does everything for Him, He blesses her with all the great things around her today.
As the newly elected vice president, Bethany will work at her best to continue to grow as a leader and help Hawaii HOSA flourish successfully. She has amazing plans and ideas ready to share to the executive council for this new season. Bethany thanks everyone for the wonderful support and can’t wait to work with all of the members soon!

joanne chi, secretary
As the new State Secretary, Joanne Chi is thrilled to serve with fellow officers on the Hawaii HOSA executive council. Through the next year, Joanne hopes to develop her skills as a leader to better serve the members of Hawaii HOSA and the community.
In her seventh grade year, Joanne was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus – a chronic autoimmune disease that negatively affected her joints and kidneys to the point where it was difficult to walk and eat. After being diagnosed and admitted to the hospital, she made tremendous leaps and bounds to recovery. Throughout her hospital stay, Joanne became inspired and immensely appreciative of the caring pediatric nurses that tended to her. She knew then and there that she wanted to help people that were in a similar situation as she was. HOSA: Future Health Professionals was the perfect organization to aid her on the journey to helping and serving others.
Joanne’s first year in HOSA was truly amazing: she was able to meet like minded people that had a passion for the healthcare industry. From watching the state officers speak and present to her first CTSO, her memories were nothing but happy and fond ones. HOSA was more than just a club, it was a place where opportunities were created. Joanne was fortunate enough to become the HOSA Service Outreach Assistant. She shadowed the vice president in coordinating service and outreach projects with Hawaii HOSA and NAMI, as well as assisted the executive council in leadership functions. Through these experiences, Joanne has been able to give back to her community and help inform others about the importance of mental health.
As a sophomore going into her junior year at Moanalua High School, Joanne participates in many co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Joanne is in her second year of being a Student Association Senator and is sharing important information to her class. Through her involvement in Student Association, she is able to inform others and practice her public speaking skills. She is currently a Music Department librarian and the Symphonic Band librarian and secretary. Joanne was also recently inducted into her class office as vice president. She is also a member of the Moanalua High School Menehune Marching Band and Color Guard. These activities have helped shape Joanne into what she is today and aids in her goal of serving others.
A quote that Joanne always remembers is “To lead is to serve” said by her band director Mr. Elden T. Seta. Band has played a big part in Joanne’s life; band isn’t just about music, it teaches people to cooperate and listen to one another. Joanne thinks that leadership is not a domineering power but rather an outlet or opportunity to serve and encourage others. Although she doesn’t have an idea of what occupation to pursue, through HOSA she hopes to learn and develop skills to better serve people and the community.

paula angela saladino, treasurer
Paula Angela Saladino was born and raised in Kalihi. She is the youngest daughter of Pol and Jolly Saladino and the sister of Julienne Rose Saladino. At a very young age, Paula was taught to always work hard in anything she does. She believes that if she puts in hard work now, anything that life throws at her in the future will become easier. One thing Paula is known for is her optimism and positivity. Paula never fails to see the positive aspects of life, even on her bad days. Paula being the interpersonal person she is, she loves to be around people. Whether it is her friends, family, or a group in general. Paula loves to be around the people she loves and enjoys making new friends.
Paula is currently a sophomore at Farrington High School. Some extracurricular activities she is in are HOSA, Filipino American club, and Hawaii Pre-Health Career Corps. As a sophomore, Paula joined Farrington’s health academy where she found out about HOSA. After hearing how much of a great experience HOSA was for many of her upperclassmen friends, she was eager to join also. She is also the sophomore representative for Farrington’s HOSA Chapter.
Ever since the beginning of middle school, Paula knew she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. It wasn’t until two years ago, as an eighth grader, that Paula was set on becoming a pediatrician. She was torn between either becoming a nurse or a doctor. Until she finally thought to herself, “Go big or go home, you only have one life to live” which led to her decision in becoming a pediatrician. Paula wholeheartedly wants to become a pediatrician because she has a strong passion for helping people and she loves kids! Many reminded Paula that becoming a doctor is very pricey and requires more than ten years of schooling. However, she believes that spending the extra money and time to go to college and medical school will be all worth it if it means that she will end up doing what she loves.
Paula’s role model is her older sister Julienne. Julienne is the most high achiever she knows. She looks up to her sister because she loves how extremely hardworking her sister is and how she prioritizes school first. Julienne inspires Paula to do her very best in school and reminds her to not take her education for granted. Without Julienne, Paula wouldn’t have taken the opportunities to get her to the person she is today.
Being the newly elected State Treasurer is still surreal to Paula because she would never have pictured herself taking on such a prestigious role. Paula is extremely enthusiastic to start working with the other state officers and Ms.Toyama. By the end of this experience, Paula hopes to better her public speaking skills and to make long lasting friendships with HOSA members. Most importantly, Paula wishes to continue to grow into the excellent leader she aspires to be.

Brycen Kawamoto, Post-Secondary Vice President
Formerly the Hawaii HOSA 2017-18 Treasurer, Brycen Kawamoto continues to serve as the 2018-19 Postsecondary VP. With three years of HOSA experience under his belt, he hopes to apply his knowledge toward further improving membership, communication, and involvement within the organization he so closely values. Having recently graduated from James B. Castle High School, he now attends the University of Hawaii at Manoa as a freshman. Eager to continue working alongside the other state officers, he looks forward to the new experiences and challenges that lay ahead.
He credits HOSA for his personal and social growth as an individual. Through his recent involvement, he’s gained the opportunity to experience new things, meet many new people, and move out of his comfort zone. HOSA has pushed him to try things he once thought he’d never do, and still continues to challenge and push him further today.
As Postsecondary VP, Brycen will never give anything less than his best and will strive to overcome any obstacles that may present itself. It is due to the enthusiasm and dedication of the HOSA members, that he will emulate these feelings in his productivity. When in the presence of uncertainty, he remembers a quote by Roy T. Bennett, “The one who falls and gets up is stronger than the one who never tried. Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying.” While he may struggle, he will never give up.
Brycen aspires to work within the healthcare field. This will allow him to work closely with others and provide aid to those in need. While he is keenly aware that there is much more for him to learn and gain, he is unafraid to take the steps to further his development.
