Kristyn Miyamoto, President

As the current Hawaii HOSA President, Kristyn Miyamoto is excited to be a member of the executive council for her third year in HOSA. Described as a dedicated musician and one with a desire to help the perplexing world around her, Kristyn Miyamoto continues to take advantage of every small opportunity around her, which has led her to be your 2020-2021 Hawaii HOSA President. Kristyn is a diligent student at Moanalua High School with focused interests in music and health. Regarding her interest in health, she has found a passion as a Physician. Having shadowed multiple health professionals in different practices since her Freshman year, she continues to learn about herself and her vocation. Being a Physician appeals to her desire to serve others in her everyday life. The call of service towards those in suffering and pain touches her soul. She plans on completing a degree in biology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She will then continue her education at an accredited medical school to receive her M.D. or D.O. She is proud of the goals that she sets and accomplishes for herself. She accomplishes her plans with her diligent nature, using every second of her day to become a better person.
Kristyn’s interest in music has been fostered since she was 6 years old when she first held the violin in her hands. Since this time, 10 years ago, she has grown interested in the French Horn, adding to her musical activities. She is a part of Moanalua High School’s Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Con Passione’ (string ensemble), and ‘Menehune’ Marching Band. Outside of school, she takes private lessons for French Horn and Violin, and is a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony’s highest performing ensemble, Youth Symphony 1 . The responsibilities of these interests places an unimaginable burden on her shoulders; however, she chooses to hold a different perspective. She fulfills every single interest to its fullest potential, never backing away from a challenge. She enjoys the challenge of these activities and the everlasting memories that are created as a result. When the pressure rises beyond comprehension, she does not fold, but rises to overcome it.

Jeremy Ruan, Vice president of technology

As the newly elected 2020-2021 Hawaii HOSA State Vice President of Technology, Jeremy Ruan is thrilled to be able to serve Hawaii HOSA once again for his second year on the State Executive Council. Jeremy hopes to use the skills he has learned this past year as the State Leadership Intern to make this HOSA year truly unforgettable and continue to grow alongside his peers, helping Hawaii HOSA to continue flourishing successfully.
As a senior attending Moanalua High School, Jeremy is committed to many extracurricular activities. Jeremy is actively involved within the Class of 2021 activities and currently serves as the Senior Class Corresponding Secretary. He looks forward to growing with them and to continue creating more memories as they get close to finishing this chapter of their lives. Jeremy has had the opportunity to hold many leadership roles throughout high school, serving as the Student Association Senator and Committee Chairs and as an editor for his school’s Ke Ali’i Yearbook Production, alongside a section leader for his performing ensembles. Jeremy is also a violinist in the Moanalua High School Symphony Orchestra and has been playing the violin since the 2nd grade but his journey truly began in middle school. Currently, Jeremy is a member of his school’s National Honor Society and looks forward to continue to give back to community.
Being in HOSA since his freshman year has taught him perseverance, dedication, and integrity. HOSA has given him countless learning opportunities and he is beyond grateful to be able to give back to this ever-giving organization that has nurtured him. He believes HOSA – Future Health Professionals is an organization that brings the young leaders of our generation together, as one HOSA family that ignites the same passion. His love and passion for HOSA and the medical field continued to blossom when he had the opportunity to attend HOSA’s International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida during his sophomore year. HOSA has allowed him to grow his understanding of servant leadership and the power of creating leaders. To lead is to serve, Jeremy hopes to use his experience to create the impact HOSA has created on him on each and every single one of our members; as he believes, his story is part of a larger story. Currently, Jeremy aspires to major in public health-global health at the University of Washington to continue working towards his childhood dream of being a healthcare professional.
Jennifer Lee once said, “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.” This quote has guided Jeremy every step of the way to the person he has grown into today. HOSA has instilled a fire in him four years ago that has carried him forward ever since then; this organization has not only broadened his horizon but allowed him to discover his passion, and has shown him the true value of service. He hopes to share his HOSA story and to influence those around him — to do everything with a passion and a purpose. Jeremy is eager to be a part of this HOSA journey with the Executive Council and our HOSA members as we live, breathe, and lead with a passion.

Reina fukuoka, Vice President of Programs

Serving as the Hawaii HOSA Vice President of Programs, Reina Fukuoka is excited and thrilled to serve on the 2020-2021 executive council. She looks forward to connecting and bonding with members all across the state, and creating a memorable year for all. As Kevin Kruse once said, “Life isn’t about getting and having, it’s about giving and being.” As people, most importantly as future health professionals, we must continue to strive to give and provide to others rather than to ourselves. Reina would like to continue to provide members of Hawaii HOSA with new opportunities to grow and enrich themselves. She is looking forward to a great year serving on the executive council and creating new memories with all members of Hawaii HOSA.
As a Senior at Moanalua High School, Reina has and continues to serve in many extracurriculars and leadership positions. She has always held leadership positions at school, stemming all the way back in elementary school. She was often involved in student government, and also served as an officer in her middle school orchestra. Through her last three years in high school she’s served many roles in multiple organizations. She served as the Secretary and section leader in her school’s Concert Orchestra, an editor for the Moanalua Ke Ali’i Yearbook Production, a Secretary in Moanalua’s HOSA chapter officer team, and much more. Utilizing these past positions and experiences, she hopes to continue to create a bright and amazing year for Hawaii HOSA.
Reina is a four year member of HOSA, having joined the organization when she was a freshman. Being curious and willing to try new things, she joined the organization, unknowing of the impact that HOSA-Future Health Professionals would have on her, and her future. The organization has helped her to create new bonds, and gave her many opportunities to grow and become a future health professional. In the future, she plans to attend a college in California to major in Biology and continue schooling to become a Physician Assistant. Serving on the executive council, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions and dreams, just as HOSA has done for her. She is looking forward to creating an unforgettable year with the council, and with all members of HOSA.

Malia Butay, secretary

Serving as Hawaii HOSA’s State Secretary, Malia is enthusiastic to share her passion for HOSA while serving on the 2020-2021 executive council. Embarking on her fourth year in HOSA, Malia recognizes how much HOSA has impacted her life. Malia is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the organization that has taught her the importance of service and her development of leadership characteristics. Malia’s goals this year for Hawaii HOSA include strengthening the bond between HOSA chapters, increasing HOSA membership, and creating new service projects with the executive council.
As a senior enrolled in Moanalua High School, Malia thoroughly participates in many extracurricular activities, all while prioritizing her academics. From being a committee chair in student government, a flute player in her school’s Symphonic Band, and even competing with her school’s Science Academic team, her wide variety of activities prove that she is always willing to grow despite the challenges. During her junior year, she began her leadership in HOSA by becoming Moanalua HOSA’s Chapter Historian.
Outside of school, Malia pursues opportunities to work with children and her peers in an educational setting. Malia is a volunteer at the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center where she engages children to explore their creativity in diverse subjects such as the importance of the environment, exploration of different cultures, and even encouraging how to create a happy and healthier Hawaii. Furthermore, Malia is also a student-teacher at the St. Philomena Parish Youth Group where she creates engaging lesson plans and manages service events for her church community. Malia prioritizes the importance of education, especially at a young age, and wishes her actions will encourage many children to activate their own natural desire to learn about the world around them as well.
Reflecting on the words “Teamwork makes the dream work,”, Malia believes in compassion above all. She tends to see life as a big complex puzzle. However, she is always looking for a deeper meaning. This mindset has led her today in believing in the need for quality and compassionate healthcare for all patients. In the future, Malia plans to major in health science and pursue a career as a physician’s assistant. In a world filled with endless possibilities, she wants to use both her empathy and courage to produce incredible change.

Obrein Antonio, historian

Obrein Antonio is the current Hawaii HOSA State Historian and is excited to use his platform to share what he and other HOSA members value. Like many people in HOSA, Obrein is also interested in the medical field, or more specifically in Emergency Medicine. Obrein likes to be on his feet and alert at all times. He believes that sitting down in an office will make him inactive and less likely to get up. His unusual love for working in a busy environment helps his busy mind accomplish more tasks. He is able to make strong decisions fast, considering the benefits and downfalls by weighing out the positives and negatives to determine his course of action. This proves how Obrein is fit to work in the ER as he is dedicated to getting there through determination and hard work. After High School, Obrein hopes to attend a prestigious university that offers a major in Neuroscience. Although the major is not popular and is uncommon, his fascination and curiosity of the human brain will motivate him to work hard to pursue his career in medicine. After All, his passion for neurology is what started his journey of becoming a future health professional.
His friends would describe him as compassionate, involved, and motivated. Obrein has a warm heart and ensures the participation of everyone within an activity or project. He is willing to give a hand to people who feel shy and introverted. Adding on, he constantly makes himself busy with sports, clubs, and helping the community. Obrein is also President of Hiking Club, he organizes and reaches out to the members every month so that their opinions are heard and taken into consideration. While managing his school work, Obrein finds time to enjoy sports. Unlike most people, Obrein enjoys running and doing cardio work, and wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world. He runs and attends cross country and track meets, which gives Obrein the opportunity to interact and meet with people who share the passion for running. Along with that, he plays soccer and is relentless to get better every season. During the weekend, when Obrein finds himself to be free, he seeks out to his community and offers help. He is a part of PHCC (Pre-Health Career Corps) and takes advantage of the endless opportunities they give. He has overcome many challenges to be where he is at right now, but he continues to take the extra mile to make his goals. Even though it gets challenging sometimes, he always reminds himself that even the strongest leaders have something to work on. Obrein believes that learning is an endless process for everyone no matter the age!

Alexis joy viloria, Secondary Representative

Our 2020-2021 Secondary Representative, Alexis Viloria, is ecstatic to be able to serve all of Hawaii HOSA in the Executive Council. Hailing from Maui High School, Alexis is known for her academic success and dedication to HOSA as a two-year council member as a Historian, and most recently, Treasurer. She joined HOSA in her Freshman year in hopes to find a career she could spend her whole life enjoying, and she has done exactly that. Competing in Veterinary Science since her very first year, she found joy in being able to study Earth’s furry companions, but since then she’s found something else worthwhile. Spending much of her time working with kids and shadowing pediatricians, Alexis continues to explore a world beyond Veterinary medicine. What is set in stone, though, is her intent to succeed and lead by example.
Alexis has spent and continues to spend much of her time planning and working towards a future at prestigious four-year colleges such as Stanford University, Cornell University, and Duke University to major in Bioengineering. She plans to continue exploring her interests in Veterinary Medicine and Pediatric Medicine throughout her time in college, striving to one day become “Dr. Viloria.“ This motivation to succeed is rooted in her passion for family. She hopes to be able to be the foundation of success for her generation and those to come.
Engaging in activities such as her school’s journalism club, E-Sports team, and Air Riflery team, Alexis is no stranger to exploration when it comes to how she spends her time. Racking up leadership positions such as President of both E-Sports and journalism, Alexis is not shy in showing her dedication to each.
As the founder and President of her school’s journalism club, Alexis finds satisfaction in being able to communicate and connect with others through her writing. Whether it be writing about the club that drives her future or encouraging others at her school to take advantage of the resources given to them, Alexis wants to be known as a positive figure in her school and even in her community. Alexis is a student writer for the Fil-Am Voice, Maui’s only Filipino newspaper, representing her Filipino roots with pride as she voices the views of the emerging generation of Filipino-Americans on Maui. She plans to do no less for all of HOSA.
This school year, Alexis plans to dedicate her time to representing HOSA chapters beyond O’ahu. She wants to make sure that all voices are heard, and all members have the opportunity to contribute to Hawaii HOSA, no matter what island they may come from. Alexis has high hopes for this school year and is looking forward to working with such an amazing executive council and collection of members as she works towards further uniting Hawaii HOSA!

Travis Makana Taylor, Postsecondary Vice President

Travis Makana Taylor was born in Hilo and raised in Na’alehu located in the Ka’u district of Hawaii Island. He’s currently a Senior attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo majoring in Art with an emphasis on Digital Media and also minoring in Business Administration.
While a junior in Ka’u High School, he discovered HOSA in 2015 when a group of his friends persuaded him to help them film their Public Service Announcement on “Sitting is Death.” His chapter was one of the 4 new chapters formed during the 2015-2016 school year when the Inaugural Hawaii Island HOSA Regional Conference took place in January 2016. Since then, his passion for HOSA grew and he became Ka’u High HOSA’s Secretary during his senior year until he graduated from Ka’u High School in 2017. During his years as a Secondary member, both of his PSA teams were unsuccessful in placing at the state level.
His passion and leadership in HOSA would continue when he was admitted to the University of Hawaii at Hilo where he served as their HOSA Treasurer during his freshman year. In 2018, his PSA team was successful in achieving a 3rd Place win at both the State and International Leadership Conference held that summer in Dallas, Texas. During his sophomore year, he served as UH Hilo HOSA’s Vice-President and he was one of the first competitors to participate in the National Geographic Learning Academic Testing Center for Future Health Professionals at last year’s ILC in Orlando, Florida where he was recognized as a Top 20 Finalist in the Human Heredity subject. He also served as an international voting delegate at last year’s ILC which from that experience inspired him to run for state office during his junior year at UH Hilo where he also served as their Chapter President. He’s proud and humble to serve as the newly elected Hawaii HOSA State Postsecondary Vice President.
Now entering his 6th year in the organization, Travis is looking forward to taking Hawaii HOSA to new heights alongside the rest of the State Executive Council team while also serving as a voice for Hawaii HOSA’s Postsecondary Division. Although he’s not pursuing a career in the health field directly, Travis continues to stay involved as a strong advocate for HOSA’s mission statement as well as helping other members succeed. He’s also certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
